1999 cats compatible with 2000?
As I hope you can imagine, a question like this is a little bit hard to just search for and I'm hoping to get an experienced voice on the matter.
I have (within my extended family) a nice 2000 A6 2.8L that is getting a bunch of O2 sensor CELs because of the cats, but it only has 130k on the motor/trans. I have another 1999 A6 (not mine) with a salvage title and well over 200k but it has cats that aren't throwing a code. Would it be possible to take the catalytic converters out of the 1999 A6 and put them into the much nicer 2000? Are they the same part? I'd really appreciate hearing some advice with people who have done a bunch of exhaust/cat work before. Thanks!

1. are you sure its the cats not the O2 sensors
if so, a cat's a cat mostly. So the question is mechanical. (yes, they vary in flow etc, but these are the same motor, so ...meh) Inspect them. Same? Go for it.

02 sensors have been changed very recently to no avail (because it is much cheaper than changing the cats) and an Audi dealer and indie have said that it is the cats and have been quoting the owner (father-in-law) 1500+ for them. I understand that they are going to be very similar but it might cause less of a headache if they were completely interchangeable which is why I'm asking the question in the first place.
