04-05 allroad or 02-03 S6?

It looks like you are correct about the basic configuration. But I doubt the only difference is
software. The AR has a very different torque curve which probably suits its intended use. I would expect differences similar to the A6 vs. S6 V-8's.

Yes, Arnott makes air bags for most air suspension vehicle. Systems are simple but you need to DIY,
since dealers prey on the unknown system. True for Audi, Land Rover, and probably others.

-Decided on allroad; here's why (thanks for GREAT comments!!)
#1 reason) I really like the look of the shorter, stubby, bumpers...gives the car a more solid-block look.
2) buying an allroad with 60,000 miles, I will not be looking at a timing belt job within two years.
3) the coil-over project is quite do-able (the air-bag ride is funky and the maintenance is not worth it).
4) I absolutely do believe the claims that the chain-cam engine can be chipped for additional 40 hp. (APR)
5) look at the outrageously low Manheim auction value: 2004's are going for $12,000, at 50,000 miles, WOW! that's $2500 less than an 03 S6. I believe the 4.2 allroad suffers from the negative maintenance reputation of the 2.7 allroad, which, love it or hate it, you must admit is one of the worst $$ maintenance cars on the face of the planet. (+ great deal for the used 4.2 buyer; sorry if you bought one new). Manheim projects auction price of $9000 by Jan 2010.
The only downer is that I will need to find an Alcantra interior for the allroad. If you have a 4.2 that you want to sell later this year (summer?) send me a note. Thanks again to all. What a blast reading all the comments! AudiWorld certainly has the most thoughtful articulate members of all automotive forums!
ps: this will be for all on-road use in southern Ohio. I have a sports car for days when there's the urge to shift; a wagon is great for hauling stuff, also surprises people when it performs; --looking for competent Audi-like performance, not necessarily the highest G-reading. --hoping to achieve 0-60 equal-or-less than current 01 4.2 of 6.7 sec. that's all.
