Is that a specified interval? Or experience talking?

Default It is a specified interval, though some people claim it is a "lifetime" part...

I think the replacement runs 4k+, so if you are woried about repair costs the S6 is going to be less.

More worried about my own next ride. Our 1999 will probably be replaced with a 2006 3.2.

Default Yup. 99 A6 to 06 A6. Perhaps this Spring or Summer.

Timing belt is due this Spring, so we either swap the belt and run the car until Fall or sell it in the Spring.

Default You really think so? It has different engine management and timing chain

rather than belt on the back end for B6S4. So the crank, cams, and engine management are all different. You really think everything else is the same? I bet the AR engine matches the VW Toureg engine more closely.

Default I was always told that it had the exact same engine. And a B6 S4 does have a chain setup at

the rear of the engine.

Exhaust is a factor too. A sharper bend or a smaller pipe can make a huge difference.

Default IMO the AR is ugly & the air suspension is problematic. The S6 was the easy choice for my wife

Ground clearance is the only real advantage the AR has and that would only come into play with really deep snow or off-roading. The S6 w/ snow tires plows through snow much deaper than it's ground clearance with ease.
