Severe Oil Leak from Top of Engine?
Hi all,
New Audi owner here, and the party has already started. Bought a '23 Prestige A6 in June of this year. It was formerly the dealer loaner, and had ~2,000 miles on it. Was in service for only 6 months, always maintained by the dealer (or so they claimed?), and still had the full Audi warranty. The dealer seemed very reputable and friendly. Others have only nice things to say about them online, too. I don't intend for this the impugn the dealer's reputations. For all intents and purposes this was still a new car.
I've put about 3,000 miles on it, mostly highway, since then. Driving into Manhattan the other day and the "add max 1 qt oil" warning popped up. I parked it in a garage and used my phone flashlight to look under the hood. Seemed like oil residue on the driver's side frame rails. I took it to the dealer. The service manager started to claim that "these engines consume about 1 qt every 1,000 miles" (side note: what?? That is like a 2-stroke engine ratio, no?) but took one look at the engine with his flashlight and stopped cold. Absolutely pissing oil out the side/top of the engine under the cover and down onto the framerail.
Since then they have been extremely slow to even diagnose the problem. Last I heard they have removed "the head cover / cam cover" and were ordering new injector seals to see if that fixes it. It appears that Audi Technical Services is instructing them to replace parts one at a time until the problem is resolved. Not the most efficient way about it.
Anyways, has anyone else experienced anything like this? Any theories about what could be wrong? Kind of bummed as this has been my first ever "nice car" purchase.

Well update for those following along at home: the new injector seals did not fix the leak. Oil is still coming out the #6 cylinder. The tech noted the injector didn't seat properly on the way in, so there may be some damage to the cylinder head. Looks like the trip home on Thanksgiving will be in a loaner!
Stay tuned...

no, they do not burn a quart of oil every 1,000 miles.
Maybe 1/2 quart during the 1st 5,000. miles, then zero after break in.
I was going to say check to be sure the tech replace the plug where the oil extractor goes on the front drivers side of the engine. If some tech didn't replace that plug when the oil was changed, it will dump oil all over the drivers side of the motor.
