I think it's tied to oil temp since it can show only 4,400 rpm with coolant gauge showing normal. Have to run for while after coolant at normal before redline goes up to 4,600

I don't have any orange lights in my 2013 tach, only red, and they immediately light up to 6200 rpm when the engine is cold. Maybe it's only a TDI and 2.0T turbo thing?

It probably was 6400 - I was guessing. My point was the lights don't increase gradually to the max red line as the car warms up.

S6's do. Also if there was an engine issue and the computer wants to limit the rev's the lights will change to the computer enforced red-line.

Looks like it's only found on the turbo and diesel engines but not the 3.0T for some reason.

Not to be pedantic, but aren't you really saying "Looks like it's only found on the turbo engines, but not on the mechanically supercharged engine." (Aren't all the "diesel" engines also turbocharged?)

Seems to me to be a turbo-only feature

Rich, Well, yeah, of course. Let's shorten that up - "....Audi turbocharged engines only". Thanks for pedantically clarifying that.
A side question: do all brands and models of auto diesel engines have turbochargers by design?

Sorry, all I really meant was that you seemed puzzled why the 3.0T lacked this feature - and to me it seemed like the turbo was the common feature (rather than a gas vs diesel distinction). It does appear that turbos are becoming far more common in diesels as well as gasoline engines these days, but to your point - my 1982 Isuzu I-mark diesel was normally aspirated

ETA: well my comments were in relation to the "Audi C7 platform A6 models" in which the thread is found
