Very strange sound in my 2014 A6 - ideas?
So last weekend, I went up to NYC. Was travelling at a rapid rate until we got to a few miles from the GWB, then stop and go (big surprise).
While idling through bumper to bumper traffic, I heard a howling/moaning sound that I can best describe as the sound you hear when you have air in your pipes or radiator at home.
This sound was very loud and very irritating, but would stop completely with any application of the brake pedal, and resume as soon as pressure was released. It also would go away if I was going a bit faster (say, over 1200 rpm engine speed). Mostly didn't hear it at highway speeds, but if so it was slightly higher pitched (although not a speed sensitive change in pitch), which would also go away with any (even the slightest) touch to the brakes.
It seemed to happen after we'd been at highway speeds for a while.
Since I've been home, running just locally, it hasn't happened at all.
Thought it may have something to do with the power brake booster, but the tech at the dealership said the power brakes on my car are electronic and have no vacuum boost.
Any ideas?
