I am likely to order in the coming months, and it's articles like this that have me wondering about the 19'' vs. 20''. I was leaning toward the 20'' because I much prefer the look, and don't mind a little bit sporty ride (hopefully still smoother than my Jetta or Cayman), but I really wonder how much smoother the 19's are.

A6 is still a luxury vehicle so 20" wheels will only give a sporty ride and certainly not as harsh as cayman (not too sure about jetta since I haven't been in 1). You can certainly feel the road but not too harsh !

19" wheel will give you more cushion and the ride is more supple and softer. Personally I prefer 19" since it is the best compromise between looks and ride comfort.

If you think appearance is more important and don't mind a little sporty ride, then go for the 20".

agreed. Most people who have bought the 20's are still loving the ride but the 19 will be a bit softer.

I test drove a car with 20's and the ride was fine. I went with the little 18's because the roads in New England have pot-holes and road surfaces that will eat both tires and wheels in no time flat! It's a shame but that is just the way it is out here. The 19's on my TT were roads rashed from pot-holes and the tires scrubbed off with-in 2 years. I'm hoping the extra rubber on the 18's will add some cushioning.
