Default Possibly thermostat

My 2012 A6 prestige 3.0T with 62k miles started exhibiting high temperature rising gauge with fan running wild. It fluctuates but staying 1 notch under max. I shut the car off before it hits max. Vcds returned no errors. Think it's possibly the thermostat? If so how much would a dealer charge off the cuff? Time to find an indy if dealer is too high... warranty is up.

Yup, it is thermostat. My previous 2012 C7 3.0T had a failed thermostat at around 50K miles, which exhibited similar symptoms you described. it would be around 5-6 hour job so I guess a dealer would charge around $700-$800 to replace thermostat. Yeah definitely indy is the way to go.

Thanks. Def was the thermostat. Getting it fixed now. Indy was the same price as dealer. So chose them, plus I get free loaner, recall taken care of for airbag alert for passenger seat, etc.

My 2012 A7 experienced the identical problem as well. It was the thermostat as well. The dealer also updated the "software" to work with the new thermostat, not sure what was updated. Since I have the extended warranty I only had to pay for the $100 deductible. Without extended warranty it would cost about $900 something.

My old 2011 B8 S4 3.0T had the thermostat fail at about 36k miles (2015), after being replaced in recall at 4k miles (2011).
