Michelin Pilot Sport AS.... what psi to run ?
#11
I have a tread depth gauge and measure the tires’ tread depth from time to time, three places for each tire (inside edge, center of tread and outside edge). Over the years this has shown me that rotation helps, but not by as much as might be expected and maybe not really worth the money a dealer charges to rotate them. Over inflation does cause the "crowned" centers to wear more than the edges of the tires; likewise, under inflation wears the edges more. Sometimes (during cold weather) I reduce the pressure/PSI to give the center of the tires a rest and let the edges wear more in an attempt to equalize tread wear. Of course for me I drive more slowly and seldom go on highway trips in winter; if I do go on a trip I up the pressures for that trip. This seemingly silly procedure has over the years (I believe) equalized the wear across the tread a bit, but does nothing to affect front/rear wear, so I still rotate now and then. The first rotation at 5,000 miles is free but after that we pay for tire rotation even with Audi Care.

My door jamb lists 39 front and 41 rear. I am typically the only one in the car. I usually run about 2 pounds lower than those figures and I rotate every 5,000ish miles. I find that if you do much spirited twisty driving that the front tires take a royal beating.
