I was poking around the web today and found the following image:

Now, this is for the RS7, but the tech should be the same for all A/S/6/7. Doesn't it imply that the camera is involved with ACC and/or Pre-sense Plus?

The lane assist uses the camera but collision avoidance and ACC is through radar. The picture seems to be showing a combination so maybe it is meant to show both.

It states "object detection assistance and lane allocation on the basis of video data", implying that the camera helps with both functions. Furthermore, why would the system highlight other cars (blue boxes) if it was just for lane assistance? There's more capability in the system than we realize, methinks.

I wouldn't assume this from that diagram's description. Read the detailed Audi US article link I included earlier in the thread. It specifically describes the ACC as radar (ACC and Braking Guard are components of Presense Front) and Lane Assist as camera/video actuated. ACC (and Brake Guard by extension) have a fairly narrow beam in order to only detect followed vehicles in the same lane as the car. This diagram shows a wide beam probably to include Lane Assist. The ACC/Braking Guard radar sensors are the round lenses in the lower grilles and do not contain cameras. The Lane Assist camera (if equipped) is located in the main grill next to the Audi emblem as I recall.

Also, keep in mind that ROW Audis have other systems that we don't get in the U.S. such as auto headlight beams which probably also use cameras or light sensors along with nav based lighting range.

It's official - the top-mounted camera (behind the rear-view mirror) is used with ACC and Predictive Emergency Braking (skip to 3:08):

Ok, I found the camera on my car. I'm eating my manual as I write this.
Mmmm. Tasty, but a bit dry.

Haha, no worries

Unfortunately the camera on our Audis is a pretty simple setup. Not really as awesome as the stereoscopic cameras that are on the 2014 Mercedes S class which provide a 3D contour map and realtime tracking of every car in the field of vision, not unlike those sweet Kinect based projects.

I'm sure that's the basis of what's on Audi's self-driving A7 demos they've been showing off to the press. Once you have a system like that, you'll be able to use radar/laser to obtain accurate distance and speed info, and use a vision sensor to accurately associate what you're reading with what's in front of you.

Which explains why my radar detector beeps a lot more these days than a few years ago...
