That's pretty dumb. Z rated snow tires wouldn't work very well..

They are telling me that because the load rating is lower that they can't put them on my car based on VIN.

WHICH IS ****ING HORSE ****... because these are oem wheels\tires..

Here are my stocks

255/35/R20 100Y

Here are the new 20's

255/35/R20 97Y

Now correct me if I'm wrong, but the lower load rating on the 20's versus the 19's is because the lower profile tire is smaller and requires less pressure\air??
The wheels and tires are identical to the ones on my car - 255 35 R20 97Y and my car is as delivered from the factory: a 2014 A6 so they obviously meet the load rating of the car.

(I assume that you meant that the stocks were 19's and the new ones are 20's?)

They are the 20 inch wheel package made by the factory for my car.

But I'm curious as to why the same car would have a load rating of 100Y for 19's and 97Y for 20's?

Any ideas?

It's not the car. Load rating is almost entirely based on the tire size. For example, the vast majority of 255/35R20 tires are 97. Similarly, most 255/40R19 are 100 as are most 245/45R18 (the remainder, I believe, are 96).

All the VIN number is telling them is which wheel/tire package came on your car and they're using that to look up what factory tires you had. It doesn't tell them what other factory options there were or what other even lower ratings might be OK.

Discount Tire isn't qualified to mount a 20" tire on a rim without scratching it, anyway.
I would NEVER let a place like that touch my car.

Go somewhere else.

I have never had a problem mounting or dismounting low profile tires at discount tire

They have repaired several tires for me and they have never charged me a dime (even though I did not purchase the tires from them)

And they will price match the tirerack price and the tax charged is basically the same as the tirerack shipping charges

I guess it all depends on which shop you go to but my experience has been great with them

I also have used them many times with no problems.

Not sure where you are located, but they the great care of my cars. I bought the wheels and tires from them and they rotate and balance them all the time. They just did a repair in one for me with no issue. They are always very careful with my wheels and tires.

I know it's already been said but it's a liability issue and you have to believe these policy changes are due to lawsuits. I went through this last year, bought 20 inch rims then went into discount tire to get tires. Everything was good to go then at the last second they looked at the sticker in the door jam. If your car came from Audi with the 18's your sticker is different then if it was sent with 20's so 97 doesn't meet spec for the cars purchased with factory 18's. I even went so far as to have my local Audi dealer send them a letter and screenshot there factory spec's authorizing the 97 rated tires for my car. No go. Took my rims to Costco the next day and purchased tires from them and no problems. They did hesitate at first but then found it in their system and went through with it.
