Default Cracked Windshield!

Had my 6-month old 2012 A6 on the highway this morning and my windshield got hit by a stone. Within a few minutes, I had a 2-foot horizontal crack right below eye level.

Does anyone know if this something I have to go to the dealer for (with the accompanying insurance claim and premium increase) or can I just go to my local glass shop to have it replaced (probably for less than my auto insurance deductible)?

Check your policy for glass coverage. Sometimes there is a much lower deductible for glass replacement.
Check with auto glass places before the dealer - they will likely be less expensive and can order an OEM replacement. They also sometimes will offer to pay the deductible as a discount.

Do you have HUD?

If so, you need a special windsheild with variable thikness of the resin between the two glass panels. It helps with the curvature of the windsheild in producing a good reflection of the HUD image.

Make sure tha the "generic" windsheild place knows this!

Always insist on OEM. Never allow them to install generic glass.

I was wondering if there was something special about the window glass since 1) the manual says that you shouldn't use window treatments like Rain-X and 2) I didn't know if the OEM glass was required for the rain sensor to work properly.

BTW, does anybody know how the rain sensor senses rain?

Modern cars use infrared sensors for this -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rain_sensor

The problem with most Generic glass is that they don't come with the sensor installed, so the installer has to rip it off the OEM glass and reapply it to the Generic glass. So the sensor is not properly adhered to the glass. With OEM glass, they attach the sensor to the glass at the factory (where the glass is made).

I've had my windshield on my A4 replaced and they forgot to apply NEW sensor gel to the sensors to work properly. The old gel won't work, insist on NEW sensor gels.
