Agree with billmac, this thing does rock! Crazy how fast it is when you step on the pedal. Immediate power with no hint of lag, love the Supercharger!

Also, the Supercharged badge is something the US importer sticks on as an image thing, it is not put on there by Audi AG. I guess Supercharged sounds cooler and more "racing" than Turbo, which has lost its former cool factor.
Both are forced air induction systems, but a turbocharger is driven by exhaust pressure from the engine, while a supercharger is belt- or chain-driven. The T in 3.0T means TFSI, Audi's forced induction system. It doesn't matter if a turbo or a supercharger is used, it's still TFSI. The Audi A8L W12 (12-cylinder) engine is normally aspirated (no forced induction) so that is an FSI system as opposed to TFSI. Hope that was helpful.

Welcome to the AW forums. This was asked and answered over three years ago. Not sure why you revived the thread as your very first post. I would recommend you feel free to get involved and contribute to some of the more current thread topics.

Welcome to the forum Vadim. If you're new to forums, it can be a little confusing at first.
I always found this particular instructional video a hoot, but helpful when I first started out.

And to stay on topic or the resurrected forum... May I add... Superchargers are great for fast reaction to low end acceleration, but loose their UMPH at higher speeds as noted by previosu posts regarding parasitic loss. Turbos are great for higher speeds. So if you are a quick get-up-and-go type, then supercharger is the way to go. If you're into high speed power, then a turbo gets you better results. Just my opinion based on my experience.

VW, Lancia and Volvo have all developed engines with both but the complexity and cost have since made the combination not cost effective so a compromise of one or the other is chosen.

Is one better than the other? Turbos are great if you normally drive in situations where the revs never drop below 3K but for most of us, the low end immediate torque is preferred. Diesels are a perfect match for a turbo - inherent low end grunt with a turbo to give it the HP at the high end.

Picking some nits here?

To add to the discussion, I have read that the 2017 S4/5 are switching from superchargers to turbos. That would seem to indicate that Audi is moving away from supercharges and I'd guess we'll see that on the 6/7s in a couple of years.

I had a 2012 BMW 550 with twin turbos. I've owned several turbo cars and let me assure you there is virtually no lag on the 550. I would not have believed it myself had I not owned the car for three years. There is a little accelerator lag due to the "fuel cut" if you take your foot off the gas for a couple of seconds, but my new A7 does that....badly.

I agree that the small, always turning, and the larger second turbo is a great way to go and will probably become very prevalent in performance cars as the displacement diminishes.

BTW - my friends V10 M5 has over 650 HP without even one turbo
