Default Phatnoise / Phatbox install writeup for Glovebox location

The parts needed to make this a 100% plug and play system into your glovebox are are listed below. Keep in mind different cables come with the Audi vs VW Phatbox units. These instructions are for only the GLOVEBOX MOUNTING LOCATION. If you want to install it in the trunk location (more expensive option - extra $80) then you'll need to buy a different harness (for trunk installation see instructions at the end of this DIY Thread)

All prices were taken from www.worldimpex.com. They have fast shipping and some of the cheapest prices online. Clairparts.com is another good source for OEM parts via phone/web.

Parts that are needed for the installation, using Audi or VW unit:

Using the Audi Phatbox Unit (000 057 110 A)
You need to buy two cables:
000 051 592 (VW Phatbox Adaptor Cable - $48 Sold Out, search eBay)
8E0 051 592 (Audi Glovebox CD Changer Cable - $30)

Using the VW Phatbox Unit (000 057 110)
You need to buy only one cable:
8E0 051 592 (Audi Glovebox CD Changer Cable - $30)

BELOW ARE PICTURES OF THE CABLES

The VW Phatbox Adaptor Cable (000 051 592; This comes packaged with the VW Phatbox):

The Audi Phatbox Adaptor Cable [DO NOT NEED THIS FOR GLOVEBOX MOUNTING] (000 051 592 A; this comes packaged with the Audi Phatbox):

Tools needed:

Audi Radio Removal Tools - T10057 ($20 from www.samstagsales.com)
Flathead scew Driver
Hammer
8mm socket with a minimum 9" extension arm

BEGIN PHATBOX (PHATNOISE) GLOVEBOX INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

Begin with taking the glove box out. There are 9 screws. 7 of the screws are located inside the glove box and are easily located. The last two are located under the glove box on the extreme left and right sides of the passenger footwell area.

Also there is a side panel on the side of the IP that needs to be removed. There is a notch at the bottom of the panel to allow a flat head screw driver to be used to pry the panel off. It's directly opposite the fuse box panel on the other side of the IP and is similar in shape.

It's highly recommended that you use an extension arm for your socket driver when trying to reach the two screws in the back of the glove box. They are nearly impossible to get out without an extension.

REMOVING THE BOLT SCREWS

Next you should disconnect the power harness to the glove box light. It is the yellow connector on top of the glovebox shown below.

GLOVEBOX LIGHTING HARNESS DISCONNECTED

Next Remove the radio using the OEM radio tools. You will need to connect the Glovebox CD Changer cable to the existing black 20 PIN connector at the top rear of the radio.

HOW TO REMOVE THE RADIO

THE GLOVEBOX CD CHANGER CABLE - Notice the Open Wire Terminals on one end (this is the part that connects into the existing radio connector)

The Radio's top connector in the rear (20 PIN Black in color) is the only connector that you need to adapt. You must plug the open wires that come supplied with the OEM Glovebox CD Changer harness into this connector. All that is needed is to follow the instructions that came with the harness and plug the wires into the proper areas in the back of the 20pin BLACK connector. Wiring instructions - Go to Page 7 of this PDF Document As you can see from the image below, there are 9 pins that need to be filled. DO NOT USE THE LOOSE COLORED CONNECTORS THAT COME WITH CD CHANGER HARNESS, THEY ARE NOT NEEDED. I BELIEVE YOU GET A YELLOW, GREEN, AND RED CONNECTOR IN THE PACKAGE. THESE ARE NOT NEEDED

THE REAR VIEW OF THE RADIO

RADIO CONNECTOR PIN OUT

Run the harness from the back of the radio to in behind the IP and out the passenger side of the IP.

The next step is the remove the pre-perforated rectangular hole that is in the top of the glovebox. It's the only area on the top of the glovebox that is marked by a rectangle. There are 6 little attachment points that need to be puched out. I left two (#1 & #2 see images below) in place so that it becomes a flap and can be put back into place if I ever unistall the phatnoise system. You can choose to puch all 6 out and remove the piece. I used a flat head screw driver and a hammer to punch out the plastic tabs.

Now all that is needed is to run the phatnoise side of the cd changer cable into the glovebox via this new hole you created. Then reinstall the glovebox (easier said than done). It's a real PITA if you are doing this yourself since you must have the glovebox held in place before putting in the first screw. I used an object under the glovebox to raise it into the proper location so that I can get at least one screw into place. Then from there it's not too bad.

Once the radio is back into place and all the connectors are connected up, you will need to unplug the phatnoise connector and then reconnect it, then power up the radio. This should allow the radio to recognize the phatnoise system. If this doesn't work, you may need to pull the radio out again and unplug the bottom connector (black 8pin connector). That will cycle the power on the radio and reinitialize the radio/phatnoise system.

Here's what it looks like installed.

It barely fits and does rest on the door slightly but when the door is shut the phat noise moves up with the door and is secure in the glovebox. It's tight enough that there is no room for the phatnoise to move around. The hardrive is not resting on anything so it is secure too and free from getting damaged. My only suggestion is to get some small velvet tape and run it along the bottom of the front edge of the phatnoise so it doesn't rub the paint off the glovebox door. Make sure the connector is not being pinched behind the phatnoise either.

Make sure you follow the instructions that came with the system to configure the phatnoise software to your vehicle's radio (symphony II/concert).

Expect the install to take about 1.5hrs if you've never taken your glovebox out. If you have before then it should only take about an hour.
Good luck!

If you wanted to mount the unit in the Trunk then you'd need this cable and mounting kit:
4B0 051 735 B ($110 - Trunk Mounted CD Changer/Phatnoise Harness)
ZVW 269 300 ($15 - Mounting Kit)

Default Great write up.

Definitely sounds like an easy afternoon job. Can't beat that price.

Default I think you would need to create a switch since the blitzsafe adaptor uses the CD Changer input...

not sure though. I know UltrasportSal did a lot of work so that you could do this, so you might shoot him an email.

Default Sure...

Do not buy the Glovebox CD Changer cable. You will only need to get the two cables listed on Clairparts.com for the Phatnoise system. One is about $105 and the other is about $45 (linked below). The longer, more expensive cable is the one that has the open wire terminals to be plugged into the radio's 20PIN connector. Then you just need to snake the wire back into the trunk. Remove the side panel and you should see an area where you can install the phatnoise. I believe it's on the Passenger side where the Nav system is installed (anyone know for sure)? If you want it to be clean you will need to buy the OEM mounting kit too, otherwise you can probably fab something up for this. UltrasportSal did a writeup on his install. Do a search for his name and the "Phatnoise or Phatbox" and you should be able to find his trunk install writeup.

You can use them with the same Phatnoise system I have linked above.
