Coilpack
<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/34925/153-5336_img.jpg"></center><p>
This picture shows the slight difference between the first 2002 1.8T coilpack 06B-905-115-H (left) and the revised 06B-905-115-J (right). The new one, we assume, is the revised part. According to the parts counter guy, the J replaces the H but he couldn't say for what reason. (I don't think there was an "I" series, hence there may be only one revision available.) Has anyone confirmed that the J-series corrects the failure problem? Has anyone had a "J" series coilpack in a 1.8T engine go bad?
There is a slight difference as you can see in the way the top coil section attaches to the shaft. Also, the H series is stamped with Audi rings, but the J series is stamped with "VW AG" (Can anyone confirm this as a regular VW 1.8T part?). Otherwise there isn't any other visual or weight difference between the two.
At 6000 mi. I haven't had a failure ... yet. I'm carrying the spare "J" in the trunk as a safeguard. The procedure to change the coilpack is pretty straight forward: (1) loosen three plastic screws on the top engine cover, remove cover, (2) disconnect harness (push down on small slotted tab to release connector from coilpack), (3) pull straight up on coilpack to remove. If the engine was running, I'd use gloves or a rag to remove, things get hot in this location.
Guess one would have to remove and install packs by trial and error if you did have a failure. I know many of you would rather see AoA pay for the tow, or better still, issue a recall campaign. It angers me that I had to buy this $50 part for peace of mind. Hopefully doing so won't jepardize any potential recall, but I really don't think that is going to happen.

Interesting, a friend with a '01.5 A41.8t just called me this afternoon...
his engine was running rough, probably another coil pack failure, unfortunately the dealer parts counter is closed today, so he'll have to show up at our local Audi meet tomorrow without his A4. I haven't had a coil pack failure yet on my '01.5, but I may have to buy one of these sucker just in case...

Thanks a lot 1/4 scale! We still have no confirmed failures of the J series coil pack yet.
If you don't mind, I'd like to put a link to this posting on the coil pack log. ... Thanks again.

Go ahead and link
but I almost regret posting this now, people are probably going to start buying these things right and left (if they haven't already), Audi is going to recoup some of their losses by selling the part rather than replacing it. Worst, they won't honor the warranty when we start bringing back spent H series coilpacks in hand. The irony of it all!
