First Pentiums now Motronic ECU's! (oh yea, they have intel processor on board too - 87C196KR's!)
All,
I wonder, Intel decided they didn't want you to over clock their pentium II's (you can take a celeron 300A and run it at 504mhz all day long!) so they are going to change the chip design to not allow this, AMD is thinking of doing the same.
Anyone read about the new ME7 Motronic ECU in the 99 Volvo C70! Looks like the more they intergrate the ECU into the car, the harder by geometric orders, chips are going to be to make for it. Most tuners had figured out how to turn up the boost on that car (which is factory turbo'd) and make 285HP. Now they are all set way back with the ECU change in 99....
Something to think about. You just never know!
Alan

Re: Isn't the C70 the first car to have an internal network where all the devices connected are like nodes on a network
Nope, even the A4, uses CANBus for how all the computers talk. There's one in the instrument cluster, one in the center console, one in the AC controlls, the main ECU, there are probably a few others that I can't think of right now!
Alan

You probably know this BUT!
There is a processor and then there is a Flash Eprom. The processor is the 87C196KR by intel, the flash part is an AMD 29f200, a replacement is an intel 28f200. Wett uses the 28f200 probably because they are easier to get, cheaper, or maybe they already had a programmer for them, who knows. But the Flash is way different from the processor, the flash stores the program and tables that the processor uses to control the car.
Hope this helps,
Alan

Maybe not 504. . .but 450, sure =)
I run a celeron 300A at 450mhz right now, on an Abit BH6 board. . . i actually brought the voltage DOWN from default 2.0V to 1.95V. . . i have been training the processor for life at 504mhz =) I actually tried it the other day, runs at 504, but needs 2.2V to do so. . . no big deal, but it's drop dead stable with the extra juice. I don't think that every 300A can run at 504, and ONLY about 80-85% of them run at 450 (which isn't a bad number in any sense). . . in addition, at 504 you have to have rugged periphials, ram, and HD that are willing to overclock as well (because the FSB is now at 112MHZ instead of 100MHZ, which is more optimal for reliability). But mines likes 504, and i'm gonna stick it there when i find 450mhz to be "slow" =)
Just a little bit of my computer dorkiness for y'all. . . =)
Every SoCal'er going to the meeting on Saturday?
