Skinnier in Real snow is better, you do lose dry road handling
Wider is worse in snow, for it floats, but will be better on dry roads the arguement about "wearing out quicker" shouldn't be true, if both have similar wear ratings, unless you are trying to spin the tires, which of course the smaller contact patch will spin easier and wear out more quickly. it all depends on where you live, if you see cold temps but not much precipitation, then go wider, if you actually see snow and SLUSHYness then skinnier is the way to go. Personally i would rather sacrifice in the winter and get through the snow everyday with skinnier. And the real reason people also like to run winter rubber is the rubber is softer, so that in the cold it remains plyable, vs summer tires which turn rock hard, becoming useless, so some people run a "high performance" winter tire jsut to deal with colder temps, and don't plan on driving into the mountain everyday. There is alot to tires, i ran 205 and i didn't like the dry performance, felt like jelly donuts, but in snow i wouldnt of done it any other way. If you are argueing for larger tires, then you haven't driven in real snow falls for weeks at a time, because then you realize the benfits. that endedup being really long... sorry -Rob |
