Water pump on an 1.8T (AWM) engine runs off the timing belt?!
I must have been living in a cave, but I've never heard of the 1.8T's running the water pump off the timing belt...until Silver Streakin pulled the pin on his tensioner yesterday! The proverbial "OH ****" moment followed.
So, just a word of warning...if you have a 2001 with an AWM engine, change the water pump with the timing belt change!!! The water pump pulley is toothed, so it would really really suck if the water pump froze before you did the next T belt job. You wouldn't hear a squeal or anything...the timing belt would just skip a couple teeth and send your motor off to la la land.

Yeah, digi showed up about 20 minutes after we pulled the pin
and realized we hadn't done the water pump. He mentioned Kenny documented it...somehow in all my PWing, I managed to miss that little tidbit.

Excuse me sir...
would you mind UPDATING your TB article with the appropriate information? It was YOUR TB article sitting on Silver Streakin's work table when he realized what had happened! :-P

https://www.audiworld.com/tech/eng35.shtml</a
