Illumination for Concert II in a non-CAN-BUS car
Since the newer Audis have CAN-BUS (Controller Area Network) a Concert II single CD disc player won't work properly when fitted to a car without CAN-BUS.
There are a number of features that will be disabled, most annoying of them being the lack of illumination for the keys.
Since I already bought a Concert II for my A4 98.5 I made some testing and found out how to go around the illumination problem:
Illumination for Concert II in a non-CAN-BUS car
(applicable to Audi A4 B5 at least, probably A6's too)
1. Prise open the lower cover of the radio.
(Warranty will end!)
2. In the upper right corner on the PCB (Radio up-side-down, with buttons and display facing away from you) there's an area holding a 18-Pin connector on the other side. From the uncovered side you can see 18 soldered joints in 2 rows.
Counting from right, pin 8 is the place you need to feed 12 volts to get the keys illuminated.
3. Solder a wire approx 2 feet long to Pin 8 or, even better, to the accompanying free 'dot' protruding between pins 7 and 9.
Pin order:
8 2
o o o o o o o o o
o o o o o o o o o
9 7 1
4. Join the other end of the wire to Pin 6 (at least in Audi A4 B5) in the 8-Pin black connector coming from the Radio aperture in the car.
5. Switch the lights on and check for results.
- Jake
PS. I take no responsibility if you blow up your car stereo by following these instructions.
It works fine on my A4 98.5 though.
