Just got home from picking up my car. In the end, the thermostat was leaking not the water pump itself. However, the pump and thermostat are apparently built into the same part, so when one goes, both are replaced.
Unfortunately, I could not get more details about the issue because I was picking up the vehicle past the regular hours, and my assigned service adviser was no longer in.
I hope this information helps!

Audi is known for making overly complex plastic pumps, so the fact that they fail doesn't surprise me. I think the previous generation A4 (2013-2016) had a recall due to the water pump, so doesn't seem too far off for the issue to br present in the B9. Mine got replaced for free on warranty. Car was in the shop for about 7 hours.

the VW EA888 is known to have waterpump problems (my 2013 A4 had one go). You would think they would have figured it out by the 3rd generation of the motor! Anyway, the thermostat is part of the housing that contains the waterpump and if one or the other fails, the whole unit is replaced. An indy can do it on a B8 around $850 (parts and labor), cost should be similar for a B9. You have to remove the intake manifold to get at the pump assembly, which is where the labor cost comes from.

Depending upon what you read, there was a water pump recall. However, when I had my car in for service recently, I asked my service adviser if my car was affected by the recall, and he said it was not.

Sadly common because Audi uses plastic for the coolant pump. Yes, the part that goes from ambient to 225F or so, then back to ambient then repeat thousands of times.... Plastic. sigh.
