What kind of condition was the original bearing support? I've wondered if it's something I should look into with almost 1/4M on mine now. I don't notice any major movement by hand on mine, though.

Audi used 57.1mm center bore, until the release of the B8 vehicles starting in late 2007 with a 66.5mm. Then D4 (A8) and C7 (A6/A7) changed to the new bore after that. So if those were A6 57.1mm bore wheels, they must have come from a C5 or C6.
If we save your image, cut out the wheel, drop that into google image search (lens.google.com), we get back hits showing 4F0 601 025 CD from the C6 A6. 18x8.0 et48. Compared to the B8 A4 stock 18" of 18x8.0 et47. Color code is 8Z8 which seems to translate to "brilliant silver". Apparently, that's also what my B8.0 A4 avant stock 5-spoke wheels are. Mein's are a bit shinier than mine these days. :-)
While Audi has other 5-V-spoke designs, it doesn't seem Audi carried that specific design (5-spoke antlers design :-) into the 66.5 era.

Was there a change in hub size when they changed the control arms bolts from m12 to m14?

With a lift the mid shaft bearing brace was super easy to swap.. two of us did it in 20-30 minutes.
Pro tip ( not me for sure!!). Unbolt the exhaust hangers, don't waste time trying to unhook the rubber..

All B8 and all new gens since then (except the VW clones, A3/TT/Q3, which are still 57.1mm) are 66.5mm center bore front and rear. So all B segment starting B8, all C segment starting C7, all D segment starting D4, and E segment starting E2 (no one uses that nomenclature for the 4M Q7/Q8, but it makes for a more parallel statement here). If they were too small, were they 57.1mm for the Audi generations prior? Were they too small the entire barrel depth, or only at the base?

If I flipped them over the "hub centric" ring fit inside the hub ring on the wheel bearing.
Thank you for the info...
I find it surprising that my VW Tiguan(5N), Audi A4(B8), and Audi Q7 (4M) all have the same bolt pattern. The 16 VW Touareg had 5x130. (I so miss that vehicle)

The original Cayenne (9PA (aka 955/957), '03-'10) / Mk2 Cayenne (92A (aka 958), '11-'18) / original Q7 (4L, '07-'15) / original Touareg (7L, '03-'10) / Mk2 Touareg (7P, '11-'17) were all the "same vehicle", with a unique 71.6mm bore 5x130mm pattern wheel hub.
The current era versions of those models, Mk3 Cayenne (9YA, '19-), Mk2 Q7 (4M, '16-), and Mk3 Touareg (CR, '18-) are again "same vehicle", now using the unified 66.5mm bore 5x112mm pattern wheel hub.
But note that the 66.5 5x112 Q models use stronger R14 lug seat bolts than the 66.5 5x112 cars, which use R13 lug seat bolts. Likewise for the wheels, with R14 lug seats and higher load ratings vs the R13 lug seats and lower weight rating wheels of the cars using the same hub pattern. I'd assume the other brands are similar on this.
(the years might vary by +1/-1 depending on what market and is being considered; I didn't go looking up the exact US market years for the VW, e.g.)
I'm guessing you got 57.1mm rings with that much size mismatch.

Yesterday I changed the front differential fluid, the center differential (transfer case) fluid and transmission filter. I reused roughly 80-85% of the original transmission fluid. With 145k miles on it there was a lot of friction material suspended in the fluid so I didn't want flaring like I had with the 12 Tiguan after changing it's fluid at 125-130k miles. Even though I had done it at 75k miles it still flared after changing it again at higher milage.
Also put on the correct front wheel spacers.
Pictures are the front and center diff fluids..
