Default Troy’s 2010 A4 Avant

This will be my build / restoral thread for the new to me Avant. I have had several wagons but they were VW and MB never an Audi. I bought this used, to be a third car to use while #2 is in the shop for engine work.

Everything works on the car, it appears to have had the timing chain serviced (tensioner and or chain). Immaculate condition inside and out and low miles for the age. But still siting at 145k miles. I did a carbon cleaning today so mechanically it is solid.

The transmission is shifting well so I don’t intend to change the fluid or filter at this stage. I did it @ 120k on the Tiguan and now it flares between shifts when it’s cold.. Not making that mistake again. I “may” change out 2 quarts at a time for a few swaps but that is a future concern, not todays.

I would love any information about the differentials, transfer case and mounts if anyone has any.

The immediate needs:

1. Front suspension rebuild.
2. Front and rear differential fluid change.
3. Transfer case fluid change.
4. Quattro fluid change.
5. Mounts. Transmission, engine, rear differential, etc.

Later possibilities:

1. Transmission fluid and filter.
2. Rear suspension rebuild.

There's a lot of info out there already in the B8 A4 forums here and at audizine. All the B8 (A4 sedan, A4 avant, A4 allroad, A5 coupe, A5 carbiolet, A5 sportback, and Q5 crossover) are all the same suspension configuration and components; there are a few minor variations like the S models using different bushings on the front axle lower straight control arm and the allroad using different bushings on the front axle upper control arms. But it's all generally the same. The problem in the MY09/MY10/MY11 range is the ball joints on the lowers were transitioning from M12 on straight / M12 on curved to M12/M14 to M14/M14. Which you are will depend on the actual build month/year. Also the change from the 65mm standard bushing on the lower curved to the 75mm hydraulic bushing.

You have a ZF 6HP28AF transmission in a US B8.0 avant. I would say at 145k, if the ATF hadn't been done previously, it's at that point you just let it go and see how long it runs. At coming up on 248k, mine is clearly not as good as it was, but it would have been around 140k by time I knew what was what with these things. Would doing it by that time have been better or worse than what I ended up with. We'll never know. I did do the front and rear diffs; not sure if that really helped anything. I did not do the center diff; you have to dismount the transmission crossbar and the fluid isn't cheap. I don't know what you mean by quattro fluid. I assume you're repeating the transfer case / center diff fluid with a different word.

On the 3.6L B6 Passat 4motion estate I had there was a "bevel gear fluid" and "4motion fluid".

What drive line fluids are on the B8?

Transmission
Transfer Case
Front diff
Rear diff?
?
Any others I should address?

Thank you in advance!

That's it. This stuff is covered in the fluid capacities tables if you google search for them. The information is also in the threads about the ZF trans fluid changes.

So I have VCDS and I have tried with the mobile app and a laptop to change the dash to show what gear I am in without success. Anyone have a link to how you code that? The VCDS site didn't have it for the B8 specifically and being new to this platform I am hesitate to experiment.

Odd, the MY09 shows Dx and Sx in the DIS. I know at some point they changed that to just be D and S, but don't know when the change was made. Not sure what you mean by the mobile app; you mean you have a HEX-NET and you tried VCDS Mobile? I wouldn't. Just use VCDS on a Windows laptop.

This didn't work? (I'd ignore the rest of the threads; process in different vehicles and different transmissions are not going to match; but the B8 ZF stuff, 0B6 or 0BK, should be the same)
You're going to have to elaborate what you are seeing if it's not working, and post up the 02-autotrans section from an autoscan so the module info can be seen. You can also do a map of the adaptations for address 02 so they can be seen and compared (maps are under applications).

Ahhh, On the Tiguan and Q7 it was just switching the gearbox to ROW (Rest of the World) to get the indicator. And there was nothing on it in the B8 section...

So basically I can trust the A5 coding ( with a grain of salt) for the A4?

B8 A4, B8 A5, B8 Q5, all the same general vehicle, just variations for different chassis specifics.

Default Front suspension rebuild

This weekend the Champagne Avant received a full rebuild of the front end, a new down pipe, engine mounts, transmission mount and new fog light grills.

It is currently awaiting an alignment and will be ready to go.
