Is it normal for my '11 Avant to have squeaky brakes when I cold start it? I've got 6K miles on the car and I've noticed the squeak the last 2 or 3 days.

How cold is it where you are? Check out the B8 S4 forum. There is a 'WTF' thread there about brake noise. There are some differences between A4 and S4 I'm sure, but there must be come commonality as well, probably the composition of the pads but not the size I'm guessing.

I've noticed it on my 11 P+ sedan also, usually goes away in a couple of minutes or after a hard break.

Although annoying, this problem is completely normal; this will be the second winter that I am dealing with brakes that squeal until they have been warmed up.

Is this related to the newer design of brake pads that is reported to give less brake dust (delivered with MY 11)?

It was probably 45 degrees F. this morning when I left. Brakes squealed for the first 2 times I needed them. Just light braking in a residential area. I hate that noise.

I don't mind the noise much anymore; in fact, I use it to warn pedestrians to stay out of my way. Be loud and proud!
