I've started using the alarm on my phones when I travel - most reliable way to wake up

I don't argue that point - I rely on the atomic clock at home as well. My point is that I am personally more "ticked off" by the lapses in build quality/reiability in these cars than by the absence of a "nice/useful" feature for a functionality I can take care of manually in seconds once or twice a year. The control arm issues, etc. drive me crazy when I think of my perception of quality.

Default I was not suggesting that it couldn't be done.

I just don't consider it, in any way, a "missing feature".

In fact, as you've probably guessed, I like it just the way it is.

Looking at the wiring diagrams for the car, it appears there is an autosyncing clock option, but I don't know if US cars get it. It likely syncs via an RDS signal, something thats far more common in Europe then here.

I am just happy that my clock keeps accurate time. it hasn't lost a minute since I got it in July. My VW Jetta (2005.5 traded in for the Audi), on the other hand, lost at least 2-3 minutes a week. When I took it to the Dealer I was told this is normal and within spec.

This is from the user manual kindly sent to me by another forum user:

Radio-controlled clock*
When the clock is in “radio-control” mode the signal reception
symbol (a radio tower with radio waves) appears in the display
⇒ fig. 4. It is then not possible to change the minutes or the date
manually.

So how do we get it into radio control mode?

The information is in your MMI or audio manual not in the large owners manual. Look in the package of documents that you received with your A4 and you will find a manual specifically for the MMI. The clock setting procedure is listed there. I hope that you are enjoying your new Audi.

Here is the section from the MMI manual (2G).

Setting the time

You can choose between a quartz clock and a radio-controlled
clock*. If you have chosen the quartz clock,
you must set the time and date yourself. The radio-controlled
clock* receives the time and date automatically.

Calling up the Time setting menu
– Press the function selector button marked "SETUP"
– Press the Time control button. The Time setting menu
will appear on the MMI display.

Selecting the time source*
– Turn the rotary push-button to Time source and press to
confirm.
– Turn the rotary push-button to quartz or radio clock* and
press to confirm. When the time source is selected as
radio clock*, the “signal reception symbol” appears on
the rev counter display.

Setting the time (only possible for time source:
quartz)

– Turn the rotary push-button to Time and press to confirm.
The hour display will be highlighted in white on the MMI
display.
– To set the hour, turn the rotary push-button clockwise or
anti-clockwise and press it. The minute display will then
be highlighted in white on the MMI display.
– To set the minutes, turn the rotary push-button clockwise
or anti-clockwise.
– Confirm the time setting by pressing the rotary push-button.

* Applies to vehicles with radio-controlled clock

Worth noting that the * indicates an optional feature, and the manual I was reading was from the UK, you may not have it on your car.
