My timing chain broke on my 2011 A4

All instances were car was throwing codes and engine misfiring.
Removed covers to find loose chain and tensioner collapsed. Did chain service and cars were fine ..
But i will say this is not the Norm. if this happens on the hwy for example chances are not good you would survive.
I will also say not many invest the time to put a tensioner and chain kit on, and then check compression ( and im sure many cars and engines have been scrapped without doing this work but were actually fixable. ) . so results obviously will vary
The mistake many mechanics and other make is they first check compression and immediately write it off.. this is not a valid check without the engine in time with a proper tensioned chain.

I see 2 cars in my area in this same position.
"oh. if i just throw another thousand at this engine, it'll be good forever"
WRONG
the problems:
1 - poor oil scraping rings - 1000 bux
2 - rebuild the head - 1000 bux
3 - new timing parts galore - 500 bux
4 - intake problems and parts - 500 bux
5 - hi press. fuel pump - 500 bux
6 - rear main seal - 1000 bux in labor
7 - balance shafts get clogged - 1000 bux
8 - fill in blank
It's incredible how VW/Audi got away with this. Engines at 100,000 miles are completely worthless unless they got kid-gloves for a decade.
I've decided to enjoy watching people fight these problems in order to maintain personal mental stability.
I did some hunting yesterday thru a friend at my local salvage yard. My best option for a CPMA or CPMB engine is $4200 shipped from Chicago with 69,000 miles on it. The car is only worth $4,000 fixed.

So to answer that thread. Yes. A regular mechanic can put another used engine in it. Yet another bloke trying to spend more on an engine than the entire value of the car once the job is done. I'm so confused.

be VERY clear what warranty means .. also it will not include R and R . I would replace the water pump on that motor even before it goes in regardless of the year.
