The new Ford Fiesta actually looks promising. (yes I just said Ford and promising in the same sentence.) It's probably too small for her though, and it's 2 doors.
I have a 2004 Mazda 3 hatchback. I love it, great car. You can get really good deals on the 2008's right now.

Do hatchbacks get less preference? Because I would think that, to most people, the Rabbit or GTI would look more "cute" than the Jetta TDI or GLI. A3 if used is OK.
I would throw out the Civic and Legacy sedans out there as well as the outgoing Mazda3 hatch. Maybe the mk2 Toyota Matrix? It all depends on what her definition of "cute" is.
