Anyone reading the Q5 forum? Geesh!
Folks shopping the Q5 comparing to X3, etc, and rarely the A4 Avant. Some comments about comparision to Allroad.
Then you read about the test drive. All the comments trying hard to see which handles the best, which most "car-like".
For chrissake just buy an Avant! The interior is ALMOST the same, minus about $10k? What do people think they are going to be doing with these cars that they shop a cross-over and not the wagon? Putting bikes on top? Ever tried that on an SUV vs. a Wagon? Watch the Tour de France...all wagons.
Best comment I've seen: "we like an SUV because you sit up higher"...they why do you expect a car-like ride or handling? If there were fewer SUV's...you wouldn't need to be so high to see over other cars.
Americans are stupid.

I'm thinking of getting the Q5. Coming from an Avant. I don't feel like doing this anymore...

You are right, much better to worry about the 15 seconds of egress than the entire driving dynamics
I'm sure cars around the world are similarly inadequate due to your lack of exercise and flexibility.

as someone who has an S4 avant (same as yours), I can still see the argument for the Q5
I don't know if you've tried taking your S4 off-road or in deep snow, but I have and the results were not so good :-( I guess one car can only do so much, at least without a suspension change.
The A4 allroad would be a nice option to have in the US. And I don't see why they don't just offer it as an option package, but the chances seem dismal.
So if you want the utility of an avant and decent handling, but also want to go off-road or in deep snow, the Q5 is one of the best options on the market.
And yes, I realize that most people who buy Q5s are soccer moms who won't take them anywhere but the mall, but I myself would consider buying one if it means safer, easier ski and camping trips.

We get a lot of snow here in Canada. I don't have a nice driveway nor a garage.

I park the Avant on the streets and sometimes it's pain to find parking.
If you don't know where I'm coming from, you shouldn't be judging me.
