Not for 2009. Given the trend, I wouldn't hold out hope that it will eventually come
Personally I refuse to buy automatic cars for myself, but fewer and fewer people know the art of driving a manual. Others want their hand free to hold the Starbucks latte or cell phone while driving. My prediction is that the stick is gone from the A4 Avant for good. If they ever drop it from the A4 sedan, they will lose me as a potential customer.

It costs $X to test and certify a drivetrain for safety and emissions in the U.S.
If they don't sell enough of a particular drive train to warrant the expense of $X there is an economic incentive to *not* sell that particular configuration. That's what's happened with the manuals in general.
Yes, it's somewhat daft that the government treats the same engine mated to a different transmission as an entirely different drive train, but that's the law as it stands.

Seriously yeah, don't understand it either, but then, I suppose with such a major component being different, there is the possibility that the crash testing results could be different.....
