I've been reading through a bunch of threads where people mention album art, but I can't seem to find anything that specifically says whether or not the MMI in my '12 A4 Avant will / can show album art when playing music from an iPod.

The mmi doesn't display the album art.

I know it doesn't "out of the box" but will it do so with the red cable that others have used in the A6/A7?

Curious if anybody's tried this / gotten it to work?

No, it will not work. Album art shows on MMI 3G+ systems with newer software. B8 platform vehicles have MMI 3G up to MY12. MY13 B8 platform vehicles are getting MMI 3G+ systems though.
