Ok what are the steps for changing the air filter. I know you must remove the initial air intake piece. Thx for all replys.

I just did mine tonight - sorry no pics, it's pretty straightforward.

1) Loosen hose clamp & remove connector hose from air filter box
2) Using a Torx 30 bit and socket wrench, loosen 6 bolts, remove cover
3) Remove/Replace filter
4) Replace cover
5) Tighten 6 bolts, replace Air Hose
6) ???
7) Profit!!!

Mine has a mesh snow filter up front that gets dirty real fast. So, lets add "clean snow filter" to the steps. And its worth cleaning monthly.

Stupid question, where is the snow filter on this car? I have had my airbox open in the past but I didn't see any mesh filter

I have to clean the one on my wife's 04 Passat 1.8t monthly but it sits at the duct entry to the airbox.

On my B6 it was down in the airbox, blocking the entrance of air at the tail end of the snorkel. Sounds like your Passat.

On my B8 its up front above radiator at the front of the snorkel. Its held in place by the top cover spanning the leading edge of underhood area. Torx fasteners. A fine gauze mesh panel that plugs right away out on the road. You might profitably leave it out altogether.

I couldn't remove the connector hose. Is there a special tool for that?

There is no tool. After you undo the clamp, you need to squeeze the hose - just grab it with both hands and press your thumbs down hard. That's going to bend it and the lip will come off the filter box end.

What filter did you get? I went with afe Pro Dry S instead of the Carbonio CAI - the price of the latter seemed unreasonable to me.

I like it. I think it's has the highest possible performance without compromising the noise level. You can barely hear a whistle when you push it hard at low RPM. It's on my edge of tolerance and I find that to be a better compromise than the stock thing.
