N0 V6 and NO 6-speed manual on B8 Avant ?
According to Car & Driver 6-speed manual will NOT be available on the B8 Avant anymore...
"The 2009 A4 Avant will come to the States only with the turbo four and Quattro all-wheel drive but in Europe will have a choice of two gasoline and three diesel engines. Three of those are turbocharged four-cylinders, and all have direct injection. And although Europeans will have a choice of six-speed manual and Tiptronic automatic transmissions, as well as a CVT, we expect only a six-speed auto for North America."
And according to AutoBild there is no 2.0 TFSI planned for the Avant at all (120hp or 160 hp 1.8T only).
"Als Motorisierungen haben die Kunden zunächst die Wahl zwischen zwei Benzinern und zwei Dieseln: 1.8 TFSI/160 PS, 3.2 FSI/265 PS, 2.0 TDI/143 PS und 3.0 TDI/240 PS. Im Herbst 2008 wird der 120 PS starke 1.8 TFSI Attraction nachgeschoben, der den Einstiegspreis auf 27.550 Euro drückt. Ebenfalls später kommt der 2.0 TDI mit 170 PS."
small 4cyl + slushbox + quattro = one slooow wagon (0-60 in 10.3 sec).

Yep, everything's speculation
Fourtitude has this:
The new Audi A4 sedan and Avant will launch in the United States in Fall 2008. Engines at launch include the new 3.2 FSI with Valvelift and the next-generation 2.0T with Valvelift. Fourtitude has tested both drivetrains, both packaged in the A5 coupe during our test.
And others mention only the 2.0T for the avant and 3.2L for the sedan. I recall something from AOA that both the avant and sedan will be available at launch with both transmissions. Engine choices weren't mentioned at the time.
I'm still curious to see what engine goes into the B8 S4....

Just one more reason that I might be buyind a BMW this time.
After owning Audis since 1984, I might be moving on to BMW. At least, I'll be able to buy the car I want, not the car AoA tells me I have to purchase.
Johan, are you listening yet?
I didn't think so. . .

This isn't anything new
It's been done with other new models in the past. Limited options and additional ones comes around the following year or half way through the first model year.
And we typically get new models a year after it's introduced in Europe. Frankly, probably a good thing... work out all of those electrical gremlins before they come over here but pretty sure blown coilpacks will still be around

if you think you'll have less "headaches"....
think again. friend work in Service for BMW dealers for many years. Getting stories from him, the 8-Series was the biggest POS they introduced with so many design flaws it was funny. When they redesigned the 7-Series, the ECU needed at least three updates before they even came off the truck.
If you get an M3 with the nice anthracite wheels, don;t scratch one. Customer had one curbed and he tried to get the paint for the wheel. BMW factory would not release the paint, only option was to purchase a new wheel.
So much for Customer Service.
