2009 A4 Lease ? How much is to much to put down?
Hi guys new to the forum 1st post. I am dealing with an Audi dealership and trying to make this work. I'm trying to keep my payments near $400/month on a lease. Here is what I was offered for a 2009 Audi A4 Quattro 18" Wheels, Bluetooth, Ipod Ibis White 6 speed Manual. MSRP $34,910.
42 Month Lease with 15,000 miles per year. Trade in difference $5,500+ plus $1K out of pocket which is $6500 total down. Free Maintenance on car. Brings my payment to $393/ month or I don't put down the 1K out of pocket and pay $420/ month.
Do you think this is a fair deal? I've been haggling with the dealer for 2 days and this is the best he's had so far. How much is to much to put down on a lease?
Thanks!

I wouldn't put down any more then I have to on a lease, so long as I can afford the payment. Unless you have a horrible money factor.
The main reason being that if it gets totaled, you end up throwing the money away. You lose a ton of value when a car is newer, and while generally negative equity issues are covered by insurance or your lease arrangements(make sure), putting down a lot of money won't put you much into positive equity territory at the 2 year mark when you have a destroyed car and need to start over.

As far as if the deal is fair, what is the money factor/residual value/actual purchase price vs. MSRP? Even with this, it's all subjective to some extent. If you live in an area with no competition you probably won't get as good a deal some here do. Also, people might get a better payment because of various loyalty programs you might not qualify for.

The residual is the norm for prem package this month. Money factor is nice (though I think the IR on a buy is too high, depending on your credit). 1k off of MSRP isn't good IMO, given they should be trying quite hard to clear out the 09s, but I would assume there is more room to bargain on a better equipped vehicle, so on this one I would defer to the judgment of other people on the forum (most people are listing how much below INVOICE they are getting, though again, they may be including incentives in some cases, and generally they are higher packages).

So in most of your opinions do you guys think I'd be crazy to put $5,500 into the lease which is the value of my entire trade in? Granted I don't total the car during the lease.

I don't think you are getting a good deal. You should be getting $1000 to $1500 under invoice. Get your price at www.truecar.com. Edmunds is not accurate. For comparison I just got a Avant MSRP $43,750 for $1500 under invoice. Don't put any more down than you need to. If you total the car on a lease or it gets stolen, that money is gone.
