replaced quite a few... Just had the driver window reg replaced... Figure the others will go when warranty is up at, what do you think, $300 to $400 each?

I find it hard to believe this part would not be identical between the B6 and B7...
unless they've switched to a cheaper design.
Maybe the ones that have been replaced have been early B6s which are starting to age?

On a side note... does anybody's 'auto-down/up' on their driver window not work anymore? Regulator?
I can press any one of my window buttons and it will auto-down or auto-up (if I pull up on the button) and they all work fine. In the past couple of months, I've noticed that my driverside window won't auto up or down anymore, and I never really use the window to begin with. But now whenever I want to I have to hold the button up or down to move my window. Anybody heard of this or does this have anything to do with the motor/regulator going bad? Maybe just an electrical gremlin in my car?

guides+lift mech = regulator. + motor = power window regulator
I replaced these twice on my old VW.
The whole window lift/guide assembly is called a "regulator". It's not just the guide. You generally replace the whole regulator. You can often keep the regulator and toss the motor, or vice-versa.
