Default A4 B7 3.2 6MT

Since I've had this car to multiple track events last season, (mpg for track events is 10-12mpg), the off-season is when I get to increase my average mpg.

I drive a B7 A4 3.2L 6MT Titanium S-Line Sport and commute in stop and go traffic 20 miles each direction 5 days per week. I ordered this car in Oct 2007 and received it in Jan 2008. It has ~32,300 miles on the odo.

My current overall (lifetime) mpg is ~21mpg. My current tank is between 25 and 27mpg.

Take that for what it's worth.

After my earlier post in this thread I did check the snorkel in my '07 2.0TQ Tip and found debris collected and the mesh filter clogged up. I cleaned that out and noticed about 1 mpg better on my 150 mile daily commute but still 2-2.5 mpg less than my '03 1.8TQ Tip. Last Friday I had the dealer replace the air filter during the 45K service (before warranty runs out) and will see what the next few tankfuls average. I am running 93 octane and have added 2 bottles of Techron to full tanks over the past few weeks.

I did ask the service advisor about why this car had lower gas mileage. The response I got included discussion about deposits on valves due to direct injection, to which the solution was their BG injection cleaning service! Don't remember the exact cost but was $100++. I'd be interested to hear if anyone used BG and then saw improvements in mileage. I hear the BG stuff is really good but I don't think I would try it on the dealers' mark-up when many independents also sell it.

Default Not far off

It looks like the mileage I'm seeing at 89 octane is not far off from what others are seeing. Those who are seeing higher are running 93. The air filter/housing cleaning helped a bit. I'll be running a bottle of techron through the system right before my next oil change to see if that helps even further.

Thanks everyone.

I was offered that induction cleaning service on another vehicle for $99 but didn't have it done. I believe that they have a special machine for this and want to use it but it does sound like something that could be beneficial.

Since we're on the topic of octanes, would it be ok to run 98-100 octane in my car... it's stock and the model is in my sig. Might be a stupid question but i would really like to know. Thanks in advance and all help is greatly appreciated.

It should be fine to run higher octane, but don't expect enhanced performance relative to the normal 93 octane. Unless you're chipped with a 100 octane program, of course!
