ugh. Potholes suck
GF hit one pretty good the other day, so she tells me.
I go to check her tire pressure last night before our drive up to Orange County and I find this:
<a href="http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2609784730081567925VAdanM"><img src="http://inlinethumb05.webshots.com/41796/2609784730081567925S600x600Q85.jpg" alt="IMG_6685"></a>
<a href="http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2359590930081567925FHnuZZ"><img src="http://inlinethumb39.webshots.com/43878/2359590930081567925S600x600Q85.jpg" alt="IMG_6686"></a>
So I pull it off to put the spare on, and once I have it off, I find another nice little surprise:

I can't believe this thing was holding air...
Oh, it gets better.
I pull the spare out and am reminded that the tire with the bubble and nail *was* the original spare.
So, why was it on the car?

... from some other fun poorly maintained San Diego road. Yay!
Ugh. She's not happy about having to replace potentially two 235/40/18 PS2s.
The other tires all have good tread left on them... What tread depth difference is acceptable between tires?

That missing chunk of rubber on the spare looks fine.
It's just cosmetic, not structural (well, except you won't have rim protection right there). I'd run it.
Know what you mean though...hit a pothole three weeks back...slightly bent the rim...two weeks later I saw the bubbled sidewall. On Monday the alignment shop gets it to see WTF else got chewed. The only upside...I reported it online, and they had it filled in less than a week.

I'm not the expert...but I'd bet very good money the answer is NO.
Man, I remember getting Audi to align the car after a suspension install...ahhh...the days of the B5! Long gone now....
