I keep it in automatic, but at times it gets a little crazy.
Sometimes i'll be driving down the road on a sunny day and they will kick on for one wipe. Rarely happens though.

definitely a little crazy
I pretty much leave it off. Nothing worse than just finishing detailing the car and then having it kick in and leave a nice rounded windshield wiper mark on the glass.

They have exactly one redeeming quality in my experience..
On the highway, I was passing a truck and the truck hit a big pool of standing water, completely covering my windshield to the point where I could not see. The wipers sprang to life before I could even think about turning them on.
Other than that, no real need I can think of..
