Default Groaning noise in steering

Can someone please give me a second opinion on this.. I'm thinking it maybe the control arm bushings, but I'm not too sure.. You hear it more when turning to thr right..

Sounds like you may have a bent control arm more than anything. Have you hit anything lately? I'd raise your car and have a look, turn ignition on and not the engine. After the CA's I'd see if the noise is coming from the steering rack.

Haven't hit anything, was thinking that it also could be the steering rack also.. Thanks for the input, I'll try what you adviced and see if that helps to locate the problem..

Have someone help steer while you try to locate the source of the noise.

Also, check to see if a tie rod is bent, inner or outer. This could be stressing your rack and making that noise.

Hi,

I have a similar noise on a 2006 A4 Quattro 2.0T, 210000 kms.

The last winter was very bad and I ended up changing both front wheel bearings due to pot holes. From what I could tell, none of the control arms looked bent when I was in there. I wouldn't imagine that a control arm would bend from a pot hole either.

I read somewhere that the power steering fluid should be changed periodically. I bought this car with 160000 kms, and it had a shady history so I don't think that it was done. I bought a turkey baster from the dollar store and examined the fluid that was in the power steering reservoir. It looked really bad, it was a very dark red colour and smelled like burnt ATF fluid.

I picked up two jugs of fluid from the dealership and over the course of two months, I siphoned out what ever was in the reservoir and refilled it with the new green fluid from the dealership once every two weeks.

The noise has been significantly reduced, but it's still there.

I suggest you start there since the fluid is around $20 a jug and the turkey baster is $1.

See if it gets any better.
