Default ECU flash degrades shifting quality, anything available to bring back smoothness?

I'm able to easily switch programs with my APR ECU flash (I have stock and stage 1), and recently drove both back-to-back. While I love the power boost of stage 1, the shifting is dramatically worse, especially from first to second.

I assume that's due to the shift points really not matching the increased power?

Anyway, In stock it's a no-brainer to smoothly accelerate from standstill to highway speeds with little perceptible interruption in acceleration. However when in Stage 1, I have a hard time getting similar smoothness at any speed. Not only are the transitions rougher, but there's a jolt in power right after shifting to second. My head actually bangs against the headrest if I don't pay extra attention. Guests in the car also complained of the increased jerkiness as well.

A way to reduce the jolts is to take longer to let go of the clutch, which wears it down more quickly. I really need to pay attention of attaining smooth transitions. Something really not necessary in stock.

Anything in the way of improving this shift quality? I'm only keeping the car till September (getting an A5) so I'm a little weary of big hardware mods.

Just wondering. Thanks in advance.

Default actually i've noticed a bit of this myself. i always attributed it to my inadequate...

driving/shifting skillz.

Default could have a small boost leak that's responsible for some surging...

that wouldn't be noticeable at stock boost levels.

Default I've noticed this too.

I've recently gotten the new ECM recall update so it erased my software. The car was great to drive, although a little slow, but shifts were very smooth. Didn't have to pay attention to shifting at all. Since getting reflashed again I have trouble engaging 2nd gear without some jerkiness. I figured it was just me.

Default Yup I get clunkiness too....unless i time it JUST right.

Basically I feel I have to be more definitive in my clutch engagement..Tends to smooth things out for me, not letting the revs drop too much.

Default I suggest you switch to stock (if you can) to see the difference...

... I didn't think there was any difference in shift quality with the flash until I switched it back to stock for service. The difference is quite noticeable. Shifting smoothly was instantly sooo much easier.

Perhaps your ECU exhibits better shifting due to different year/manufacturer/octane rating. I'm running APR stage 1, 91 octane on a 2007 A4 quattro manual.
