Default Brake Noise

I have a 2007 A4 2.0 and I hear a rhythmic scraping noise at low speed. My dealer says it is due to a "lip" being formed on my brake rotors. They also commented that the rotors on the passenger side of the car are both warped. This does not sound right to me as I hear the noise from the front left and I don't drive the car hard and it only has 25k miles on it. Also I don't feel any vibrations in the wheel or pedal when braking so I am surprised that one side of the car would be warped.

I am curious if anyone else has experienced this same problem. Any solutions besides replacing the rotors?

Thanks,

Default A "lip" would be visibly noticeable.

I too have 25k miles on my '07 and no "lip" or warping of rotors. (Knock wood.) Check the splash guards behind the rotors if they somehow got bent they might scrape against the rotor.

Default I have been finding that my friends who drive mildly tend to warp their rotors more.

This is a baseless theory, but instead of trail braking I've been late-braking, much harder, and for shorter periods of time for a few years now. I've also been heel/toeing to assist with braking.

I've noticed better pad life, and my rotors have been fine since I've been doing this.

I have nothing to back this up though, and it's just my personal experience. My gf, dad, and a few friends seem to be warping rotors all the time, and they all trail brake rather gently, but for longer periods of time.

Default I'd get a second opinion - no vibration sounds like no warp to me

Brake noise can be a lot of things. Pad deposits (for example from using the handbrake after hard driving when the rotors are really hot) can make a very nasty scraping noise that won't be consistent as the tire rotates. It's not actual scraping, but high frequency vibration. Driving around for a few weeks wears the material off and the noise goes away.

Brake pad squeal can also be caused by the pad shims shifting.

See below for a good article from Stoptech on brake issues.

I don't see how it can be warped rotors without vibration. And I don't see how it can be warped rotors on a lightly driven 25K car without it being a warranty repair. If the dealer wants to do it for free, go ahead. Otherwise take it to another dealer or good local Audi specialist.

http://www.stoptech.com/tech_info/wp_warped_brakedisk.shtml
