17" tire recommendation for 2006 B7 Quattro in Michigan
#11
So, I understand the no such thing argument, but...
there are still classes of tires called ultra-high performance all-season, and high-performance all season, etc.
I do not have the luxury, nor the desire to run two sets, nor do I wish to store a second set. So, I am looking for the best compromise, knowing it is a compromise.
I have seen 2 suggestions, the Bridgestone Potenza's and the Goodyear F1.
Anyone in a cold climate running anything else that they are happy with (no dedicated snows)?

this is true
I've put so many highway miles on my summer tires its almost a waste. Ill probably throw on some pilot sport a/s when they wear out, but I wouldn't dare go through a winter without snow tires. They end up costing you the same in the end. I don't see the rationale to compromise, atleast not in the Midwest.

Pirella P6s - that came std on my S-Line - don't suck. They're not great either.
I tend to agree with RichAA below on waiting.
BTW: where in michigan are you? I'm in Grosse Pointe.

Yes, one "all-season" may be better than another "all-season", but it still isn't
what I would call "high performance".
For when it counts... that is, in winter weather, they are quite the compromise... and that could get expensive.
If that is really what one wants, then I would still recommend the Nokian WR. It's a great winter tire, although the summer performance will be a little weak...

Kumho Ecsta ASX
i was looking at several tires a while back... was very unhappy with the Pirelli's that came on the car. Put the Kumho's on per the advice of a friend in Atlanta with all All-Road. Been very happy with them... now in Denver and have been good with the weather... quattro helps... but if you want to get technical...
