what synthetic oil do you guys use in the summer
#22
Not in normal 30 weight oil, esp dino w/SM spec. What you guys want is a heavy "Euro" 30 like...
MaxLife Synth, Mobil 1 10w-30 Hi-Miles, WalMart SuperTech Synth (yes!) 10w-30 HM and German Syntec 0w-30 and Castrol GTX HM.
Brands don't matter as much as the product does, that is all brands seem to have a single unique product that is usefull. There is no such thing as "bad" oil (except unrated or lower than SL stuff).
Oil weight is very dependent on temp, so you gotta determine how far over/under the temp of +212f that oil visc is rated at on the label. Old lady's stock 150hp Passat could use thin 30 Mobil 1 Pennzoil Platinum etc. Put that in a modded K-04...it'll chew it down and heat it up to 1/2 the visc it should be. V6 engines burn a bit of oil, so thin stuff could be a problem there too. The basic rule w/any machine lube is to use the thinnest possible w/o excess wear. Euro specs of a 40 weight assume hi-speed extended driving. Under +212f oil temp, that 30 weight is thicker than a 40....see? Going into summer, I'd stick with 40 weight. Mobil 1 0w-40 being a thin 40 that will shear to a 30, that's all I'm saying about that....great winter oil.

Pretty decent result w/TDT in this Audi V8 lab report...
Mobil 1 TDT 5w-40, 6994 miles, 2002 Audi A8L
"This change was Mobil 1,Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40. Results are the left-hand column of data. Note that the fuel dilution problem visible in the first analysis is gone. Wear, particularly per mile, is very low. I suppose the increased tin is still so low it does not mean anything - yes?
Previous change was Mobil 1, 0w-40, no analysis done.
The time before that was Audi dealer oil (looks like sheared or diluted 5w-30, probably not any 502-rated oil). This is in the right-hand column. Note the fuel dilution.

Comments (Blackstone Labs): This oil is working well for you. Wear looks good too, even though you ran this oil more than twice the miles of the last sample. Metals all match up well with universal averages, and you haven't yet found the ceiling on how long you can run the oil. Try 8000 miles.
