Default a4 crankshaft position sensor

Hey Guys,
Just had a question here, not sure how easy it is to answer, but my car is having issues staying on, got a P0321 error with the check engine light. Decided to buy the crankshaft sensor. Now by what I've seen in other posts, is the crankshaft sensor the same cable at the engine speed sensor??

I've seen sites referring crankshaft sensor as a engine speed sensor as well so I'm a bit confused. They state that the engine speed sensor is located near the oil filter in my car, which I've located, just need to know if that's the right cable I'm replacing.

Thanks
-Ramon

Default I think they're the same thing...

My A4 was having hard starts. I can't track down my VagCom report, but the error you have sounds the same.

I'm pretty sure Engine Speed Sensor (ESS) and Crank Position Sensor (CPS) are the same thing, one may be what they called it in earlier model years.

I followed this DIY and successfully replaced CPS. Problem went away.

Hey MaxD,
Thanks for the response and the link, changed the sensor this morning and my car turned on with no problems!! Now unfortunately I'm not hearing an annoying rattling in the rear end of my car, almost by where the gas tank is located..guess that's another mystery that needs some solving.

Rattle or whine? Rattle could be a broken exhaust hanger. Whine could be the fuel pump. Can you be more specific on the location?

It sounded like a rattling sound by the rear passenger side, but strange enough after that first day, it stopped and haven't heard it since then. car is running good.

Sounds like fuel pump. When is the last time you changed the fuel filter? It could be clogging up and causing the pump to work harder and be noisy which will eventually fail the pump.

If you constantly run your fuel level down to E you can also risk over heating the pump.

The fuel is what cools the pump so if it's constantly getting too hot it will fail prematurely.

I actually changed it like 3 weeks ago since it was never changed.

Without hearing the actual sound, my guess would also be a clogged fuel filter.
