My front Tone ring was damaged when the wheel bearing went out. I want to just replace the tone ring and not the CV joint or entire axle. I cannot find the tone ring as a separate part. It is only part of the axle assy. Anyone know where I can find the tone ring or explain why it only comes as part of the axle?

Well...they are not sold separate. But They tap off rather easily and tap back on easily. If you could find a junk core old drive axle to take one from thats about all you can do. If your not in a huge hurry if I get an a4 in for an axle ill take the ring off the old axle and put it in a padded envelope and send it to you. Be helpful to know if the rings the same for A6's and other a4's or passats.

Thanks for the offer. After talking to a private mechanic, specializes in VW TDI, I broke down and bought the outer CV joint with the tone ring mounted already. $140 and a couple hours work, I had it put back together and working fine. Next project is Quattro transmission fluid and filter change, and finally get the check engine light resolved.
