DSMIC is great if you can find it...quite hard now a days. Used is probably your best shot but even
then it's rare that they show up. About the lag concern, I didn't feel any lag with the spool time after installing the FMIC. It felt just like before installing it.
Greedspeed use to sell a DSMIC kit but stopped recently. When they were selling it, the price was $999 IIRC.

DSMIC or FMIC is the way to go. I know you said you won't be going Bt anytime soon
so realistically a DSMIC setup would be great. As for a HFC, you have alot of options. 034 just inroduced one that is quite affordable and good quality.
