no mechanic can figure it out
Hi everyone,
While my car is idle, I hear this popping noise from the engine. If I lift my hood, it seems like it is coming from the airbox.
The following was completed but still I have the same popping noise:
MAF sensor cleaned
Airbox removed and reseated.
Any ideas as I am taking my car in again tomorrow.
Thanks

S4master,
Thanks for the reply.
Well I did have a K&N but because of the noise I we removed it and put in a regular air filter.
No it is not chipped and yes my engine is 1.8 T (2005 A4 Quattro, 1.8T). About 150,000 KM.
Hope that helps.

That's the thing audi01a6, I have no codes. Mechanic did a full vagcom scan and found nothing abnormal.
It does not misfire car runs fine it just bothers me knowing that I can hear the popping noise (like popcorn popping) while even sitting in my car. Knowing something is not right with the car bugs me that's all. Is it the catalytic converter?
Anything I can check or look for if I borrow a friends vagcom. Please let me know with instructions if you could (since I am a noobie).
Thanks again

Isnt there a baffle in there that opens when the intakes clogged? Could that be opening and closing slightly? Is your snow filter clogged? That little screen before the air filter?

Thanks Audi0s,
Well the mechanic took the whole air box out and cleaned whatever and reseated with no difference. Any other ideas?
It "almost" sounds like it is coming from the catalytic converter next to the airbox, but they are so close to each other it is hard to tell.

Is it a rythmic pop like it's synchronized with the RPM's or is it random? I think if random it may just be expansion and contraction of the metal or possibly a slight expanion/ contraction at the connections of the exhaust manifold to the Cat. Maybe they're not as tight as could be?
To absolutely isolate it a mechanics stethoscope (sp?) could be used to help isolate it.
Just a thought and good luck.
