Hard dilemma 02 3.0b6 or 01.5 b5 s4
Is it really worth it to spend an extra 12k and upgrade to get an b5 s4 coming from an 01 2.8 or get a newer body with an 3.0. How is the 3.0 compared to the 2.8 because I am disappointed in the performance of my 2.8 and I've heard negative comments about the 3.0 as well. Any help and tips from 3.0 owners would be greatly appreciated.

There's no comparison between the performance of the B6 3.0 and B5 S4: the S4 wins hands down
Not to mention a chip would boost the amount of power the 2.7T makes significantly, and the options for making more power still out of the motor are vast (while extremely limited on the 3.0)
It comes down to what your preferences are. If you don't have a strong one for or against B5 vs B6, and you have the extra money to spend, I'd say go for the S4. I love how my B6 looks, but I can also use more power from the 3.0, even though it's really quite adequate, and IMO a much stronger engine than the 2.8 which I drove before the B6 (more power is always nice)

I'd go B6 1.8t for performance and cost...
The B5 S4 is a great performer, but will cost you a fortune in the event of very common turbo failures. You have to drop the motor to replace the turbos. In the 1.8t you can simply swap the turbo right on the car.
Also the cost of performance upgrades for the B6 1.8T have gone down dramatically. You can now get a complete MTM Stage 3 including exhaust and hiflow cat that will not trigger a CEL for about 5 grand. That will take your 1.8T to the performance of a B5 S4 and far past that of a B6 3.0.
cheers! Mike

I beg to differ. When I bought my 3.0, I was actually at the dealer to buy a
B5 S4. When test drove them both back to back, the 20hp difference wasn't really noticeable to me. The 3.0 makes up in torque what it loses to the 2.7t in hp. Plus, there's HUGE reliability issues when you chip the B5 S4. I doubt you'll get one with a warranty, and who wants to pay 6 Large to replace turbos if you chip it and they go.
My 3.0 is chipped, header back exhaust, and I'm real happy with the performace. I run with my friend in his APR Stage II+ 1.8t all the time, and I never have trouble pulling away.
Just my thoughts....

Right, but if you do that, reliability becomes a serious issue. Unless you have th $$ for K04's...
I prefer to know my car is going run, and not have to worry about turbos going.

Are you FWD or Quattro? From a standstill, my 3.0 cannot keep up...
with a stock Allroad, let alone an S4 (I am not aware that our 3.0 has an advantage in torque, by the way)... I didn't know about the reliability issue when chipping; I didn't factor that in when recommending the S4. I would still say you can squeeze a lot more power out of the 2.7T than the 3.0, if that's a consideration.
Are you running without cats when you say you've got a header-back exhaust? And which chip are you running?
