So I hear this very faint whining noise as boost builds...
Yesterday, I heard this weird noise as I was pulling out of my garage. It sounded like almost a whine. It only happens at low RPMs, 2000-2500, I'm not sure if it's coming from the turbo or some other component. I don't think I heard it on Friday (installed and flashed) or Saturday.
I'd like to not think that its the dreaded dentist drill sound (how loud is it suppose to be?) because it doesn't happen throughout the RPMs, only as the boost builds initially (again, 2k-2.5k RPMs) then it's the normal turbo spooling sound, like on my K03 previously. You can't hear it when the radio is on...I just happened to have the radio off when I first heard it. It's not very high pitched but higher than a normal turbo spooling sound.
Could it be a sign that the turbo is bad? The turbo has less than 10k miles on it. My mechanic checked it out, everything was in great shape. He cleaned it up and lubricated it prior to putting it in. Or could it be the DV?
Power is still there though =D

The bigger the turbo, the easier it is to hear the spool up. I doubt its bad...
Once it has spooled and is still screaming, then you may have a bad turbo. That being said for piece of mind pull off your TIP and feel for shaft play.

The normal spool is definitely louder than the K03. Just weird that the initial spool is louder
than normal for a few hundred RPMs.

The K04 is louder, both while its building boost and before
I had the same noise when I had it on my car, and AFAIK its normal. The other thing you could do is just check for any boost leaks, mainly where the turbo inlet pipe connects to the turbo; I know I had several leaks there.

Cool, thanks Matt. I'm going to check out the turbo later today.
Everything else feels fine, power is there. Just the noise caught my attention. I'm one of those people who notices little noises and think, hmmm.
