Bad Cat or Muffler?

Bad Cat or Muffler?
A sudden loud boom sound broke my 'so far no problem' 1999 A4 1.8 Turbo @ 60K miles dream. Now the car sounds like a racer ....without a muffler. But the noise is not coming from the tail but from the front engine compartment. Also exhaust is now circulating into the cabin.
I suspect the catalytic converter. Funny thing is that the engine light warning is not ON. The car drives OK albeit lethargic.
My question to all ye experts are:
Is replacing a Cat something a home-mechanic can tackle after buying parts from the internet? I still remember how tough it was to get the right tool to replace the oxygen sensor.....
What is your experience?
I know Barriar motor (in seattle) will lovemy $1500. I would like to disappoint them.

Re: Pobably a cracked cat. They can be rewelded.
With some help from you guys I figure that I have a broken cat at flange...very common to A4 98-99. Why shouldn't the dealer take care of it under 7/70000K warranty?
Any experience out there with Seattle Dealers?
Thx everyone.
