Kudos to you for taking all the time to take these pics and write this all up!
This is an excellent article. It almost makes me feel comfortable enough to do mine.

You are welcome. In defense to shops, this does take some serious time on their end. They do have
hourly rates they charge and there is little you can do.
I like working on my own cars so that's good. But I also don't mind paying a shop to do something I don't feel like doing as long as I know:
1/They will do a good, thorough job
2/will stand behind their work
3/ and offer some kind of warranty on what they did
I can see how they charge so much, but if you are willing, you can do it yourself. It's not like swapping a transmission or something, although, even that is doable with car on jack stands;-)
If I had the money, I would rather pay my shop to do it and I would spend a day or two of the weekend snowboarding. I would make it to a friend's b-day party. There is still cost to your time!
And there is nothing worse than paying a shop enormous amounts of money to do something and they still don't do it right. A lot of that happens around, dealer or not. But there are also a lot fo good experiences that do not get posted.

Great write up. I now understand why this is a more complex job than...
the 1.8T and 4.2 C5 A6 engine.
Congrats for your efforts and thank you for documenting it in the detail manner you did.
