a44me2, this sounds like exactly the same problem I'm having, I'll have to check that clamp, is it hard to get to? Also, does yours only do it when the temp is cool outside? Say 65 degrees or colder? Mine also does it when the A/C is on regardless of the temp, even if it's 90 outside if the A/C is on I notice it. I've taken it to three places and have gotten different answers each time so if this works I will be forever grateful.

Yes, I first noticed the noise when the weather was cool. I thought the ps pump was fragged but I tried flushing it with temparary success. The clamp is easy to get to. It is under the front cover on the 3.0 , and is at the top front of the engine. I cut mine off and replaced it with a screw type clamp so I could be sure to get a tight fit. When I had the new clamp on I turned the wheel lock to lock a few times to get the air out, the results were instantaneous. Good luck, hope it works for you too.

I'm not having too much luck. Is it the hose that comes out to the left and then goes immediately into a 90 degree elbow and goes back towards the rear of the car?

Hope this helps. This is the new clamp under the front, top engine cover.

Worked like a charm! I was able to wiggle mine back and forth a hair with just my fingers and mine was also covered in same black goo you referred to. I re clamped the hose and it took care of the problem. My hose seems really brittle and the noise isn't 100% gone so I'm going to replace the hose and flush the power steering fluid and it should be good as new. With that said I'd say it's about 90% gone and the only noise it makes is if I'm at a complete stop and move the wheel back and forth. Otherwise the whining noise when coming to a stop and when A/C is on are completely gone. Thanks so much, you saved me from wasting $1000 on a new compressor! Hard to believe after three places including a certified Audi shop no one could figure this out. Thanks again!

Problem solved here as well. I replaced the clamp (mine was a thin metal one...had to cut it off) and replaced it with a regular hose clamp. Bled the system and topped off the fluid, now she runs great.

Thanks for the tip!

Now onto the next maintenance item...

Excellent find! I just did the Blau kit timing belt with water pump so I had to move the p/s pump. Bled the power steering twice now due to the noise and was going to hunt down my air leak problem this weekend. Now all I need is a hose clamp and I know right where to go. Thanks!
